- HCI Founder Jon M. Huntsman, philanthropist, industrialist and cancer survivor, and his wife, Karen, are personally committed to finding a cure for cancer and relieving the suffering it causes.
- HCI’s approach to fighting the war on cancer is three-fold: 1) research into the fundamental causes of cancer, particularly genetics; 2) team approach that features physicians and researchers working side-by-side to treat specific types of cancer; and 3) an outreach program that educates patients, families and the public.
- HCI is a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), a 21-member alliance of the world's leading cancer centers located throughout the United States.
- HCI holds Cancer Center designation by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), one of only 65 such cancer centers in the nation.
- HCI houses and manages the largest population database in the world. Using this resource allowed University of Utah researchers, including several at Huntsman Cancer Institute, to discover several genes that when mutated, result in a higher risk of cancer in breast (BRCA 1 & 2) and colon (APC) cancer, and melanoma (p16).
- HCI operates several high-risk research clinics that focus on cancers of the breast, colon, pancreas, and melanoma. HCI treats patients with all forms of cancer.
- HCI meets the highest national standard for cancer care, utilizing a team approach that includes treatment, genetic counseling, educational resources, and pain and palliative care.
- The HCI Cancer Learning Center for patient and public education contains one of the nation’s largest collections of cancer-related publications.
- HCI outpatient clinics registered more than 46,000visits in 2008.
